Pintura Studio

A New York-based textile and wallpaper studio by Christine Isles and Edward Rollins — and one of the few collections in international interiors whose work begins with hand-cut stencils. Every Pintura Studio design starts in the same way it did in 1996: drawn by hand, cut by hand, and printed in the United States from silkscreens made directly from the original stencils. The result is a collection with the unmistakable depth of decorative-arts handwork, in a multi-cultural, multi-epoch design vocabulary that draws on Coptic, Venetian, Ottoman, Mughal and Renaissance pattern.

Christine Isles and Edward Rollins have worked in partnership since 1990. Rollins, originally from Louisville Kentucky, studied at Pratt Institute and Columbia University; Isles, Canadian-born and raised in Massachusetts, graduated from Parsons School of Design in fashion design. They began their careers as apprentices to John Fischer and Patrick Boivin, two of the most accomplished decorative painters of the 1980s, where they learned the intricate skill of cutting stencils by hand.
For years they hand-stencilled walls and floors for some of the world's most celebrated designers — projects in New York, Toronto, Palm Beach, Caracas, Long Island, Nantucket and beyond. The pivot to textiles came in 1996, when Mica Ertegun of MAC II asked them to stencil onto fabric for a Sao Paulo project. Pintura Studio's textile and wallpaper collection has grown from that original commission, and the studio's work has since been featured in Architectural Digest's Great Design Issue and across the leading US interior and design press.

Every Pintura Studio design begins as a hand-cut stencil — a working library of which the studio has produced and kept since 1990. To allow the collection to be produced beyond what two hands can stencil directly, Isles and Rollins translate each hand-cut stencil onto acetates by hand, which then become silkscreens. The result preserves the depth and irregularity of hand-stencilled work in a form that can be hand-printed onto fabric and wallpaper.
For very special projects, Pintura Studio combines hand-printing and hand-stencilling within a single piece — producing textiles that are unusually rich, sumptuous, and effectively unique.

Pintura Studio fabrics are suitable for curtaining, upholstery, cushions, headboards, lampshades and soft furnishings across residential, commercial and hospitality interiors. The hand-woven silk grounds are best suited to feature applications — cushions, drapery, panels, headboards — while the linen, cotton and outdoor ranges work across the full range of soft furnishing applications.

Many Pintura Studio designs are available as hand-printed wallpaper alongside the fabric range — useful when continuing a print across walls and soft furnishings within a single scheme. Contact MOTIVO for specific design availability.
