Fanny Shorter
A British designer and printmaker working from her studio at Cockpit Arts in London, where every piece is hand screen-printed in short runs. Fanny's textiles begin life as detailed illustrations — drawn by hand, characterful, idiosyncratic — and are translated to natural linen through traditional screen-printing using water-based inks. The result is a collection with the unmistakable presence of an illustrator's line, made for designers who specify with character.
Fanny grew up in Winchester, surrounded by historic architecture and English countryside, in a home filled with vibrant, idiosyncratic prints on books, plates, cushions and wallpaper. Frequent childhood visits to the V&A, the Natural History Museum and National Trust properties formed the visual vocabulary that runs through her work today.
She trained as an illustrator at Brighton University, with early commercial illustration clients including Twinings, the Cutty Sark, the Wellcome Collection and Mr Jones Watches. In 2011 she launched her eponymous range of hand-printed textiles, wallcoverings and home accessories from Cockpit Arts in London. Her work is stocked by Liberty, the William Morris Gallery and the Southbank Centre.
Fanny Shorter's work is rooted in traditional British craftsmanship — unmistakably contemporary, but with the slow rhythms of handwork built in. Every textile is hand screen-printed in the UK in short runs, using ethically sourced base cloths and water-based inks. Because everything is printed by hand, each piece carries small nuances from the printing process — not flaws but signs of making.
The intention is timeless rather than trend-led: textiles to keep, not to discard.
Fanny Shorter's furnishing range is hand-printed on natural linen, suitable for curtaining, upholstery, cushions, headboards, lampshades and soft furnishings across residential, commercial and hospitality interiors. Wallcoverings and home accessories complete the range.
Fanny Shorter is available in Australia exclusively through MOTIVO. Because every piece is hand screen-printed in short runs, lead times reflect the making process and the studio's commitment to minimising waste — we're happy to advise on timelines and quantities for specific projects.
