A plant-based leather alternative made from nopal cactus, produced in Mexico. Recognised internationally as one of the most credible alternatives to animal and PVC-based leathers, this cactus-derived material is being adopted across furniture, fashion and the automotive industries — and is now available to Australian designers through MOTIVO.
For specifiers working to environmental briefs, hospitality fitouts that need to meet sustainability standards, or residential projects with vegan or plant-based requirements, this is a genuinely high-performing alternative — without the trade-offs designers usually associate with eco materials.

The material is produced from mature leaves of the nopal cactus (Opuntia, also known as prickly pear), which grows naturally and abundantly across Mexico with virtually no irrigation — the plant absorbs water from atmospheric humidity. Mature leaves are harvested without damaging the plant, dried in the sun, and processed using a patented formula into a flexible, durable leather alternative.
Because the cactus regrows and absorbs CO₂ as it does, the production cycle is carbon-positive — a meaningful distinction in the sustainable materials category.
